You will visit the port city of Marseilles. Here you can sample some of the finest seafood the Mediterranean has to offer. The city of Avignon, once under papal rule, has the massive Palais des Papes (Popes’ Palace). This is a treasure chest of history and art. You will also visit Pont du Gard, the famous three tier Roman aqueduct which crosses the Gardon River. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and built around 40AD, making it almost 2000 years old! A kayak tour will take you down the Gardon River allowing you the best photo opportunities.
You will also visit Nîmes, often referred to as the Rome of France. This city is famous for its well preserved Roman monuments. The Roman Amphitheatre is still in use today and used for concerts and plays. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape we recommend that you try the local wine. Within this region, almost all the cultivatable land has grapevines planted. The town of Orange, like Nîmes, is an area of high Roman influence. The village of Les Baux-de-Provence is set atop a rocky outcrop. It has a castle overlooking the planes beneath it. It is often referred to as one of the most beautiful villages in France.
